Convertible car seat question?
Astragalo asked:
My husband and I each have our own cars and only one car seat. He works 3rd shift while I work 8am – 4pm, so we thought we’d only need one. Of course, one of us forgets to take it out of his car and he ends up driving 60+ miles with a car seat he’s not using…always when I really need it!

I’m planning on buying a convertible car seat but have seen the less expensive ones, like Cosco. They’re less padded but are safe. Does the lack of padding really make a baby uncomfortable? Please answer if you own a less than cushiony convertible car seat. Thanks!

I have the Cosco convertible car seat for my son and absolutely love it! I had $200 to shop with, so price wasn’t that big an issue. I did some research on-line and the seat got rave reviews (even from a couple people that had been in accidents), so I bit the bullet and made the $50 purchase. I was a little worried, feeling like a neglectful mommy saving money on such and important item, but I wouldn’t have made the purchase without the good reviews. When I went to the fire dept. to have it installed, they informed me that it’s a very good seat and actually the one they recommend and sell there.
My son is now 17 mos. old and never appears to be uncomfortable due to lack of padding. The seat is very simple to install and you can easily lengthen and shorten the straps. I give this seat two thumbs up!
Hope this helps!

We have the Cosco one and we love it!! It has anchors on it for either position! I think the less padding is just fine. It’s just as safe and my son doesn’t seem to mind. He loves going for rides and nothing bad has ever happened. Hope you enjoy it!

I owned a Cosco Convertible car seat and didn’t like it at all. My son was not comfortable in the seat, he would always cry in the seat. The straps were always twisting. I would not recommend this seat. Plus, I just didn’t feel comfortable with the safety of the seat. There infant seat didn’t even pass crash tests. If I were you and was lookiing for a inexpensive seat I would probably get a Fisher Price Safe Voyage convertible Car Seat. Its made by Britax and a lower cost. The don’t make this seat anymore, but you can get one on clearence. I have this seat and I really like it. My son loves it also and it can hold your child until they are 55 pounds.

I bought the Cosco Alpha Omega Elite and it works perfectly for my son. Of course I can’t ask him if he is comfortable because he can’t speak, and in fact he wouldn’t know the difference compared to the Britax brands because frankly, I’m not paying that much for one.
Don’t get swayed by the sales people telling you they’ll be more comfortable… thats just a gimic.
The AOE goes up to 100 lbs as a booster seat and can be used rear facing or front facing. It is a little bit difficult to get into your car, but I think they’re great. Good luck!
FYI – I’m not denying Britax safety, but all carseats are regulated by the government and if they weren’t safe, they wouldn’t be on the market.
